United We Stand

This blog site was created one night when I was particularly frustrated to find out that our union dues were paying for a temporary employee and a soon-to-be retiree to fly to New York for two weeks. It frustrated me because I could see no reason that either of those two people needed any training from Liuna. That was the Last Straw after many previous upsetting instances, mentioned throughout this site by myself and others. That's when I decided that I had to speak up, and emailed this link to a few of those I knew were concerned as well so they could anonymously vent their frustrations just as I did.

But, to be fair, I am now emailing the link to all classifieds, since Union processes, policies, and activities are something every dues paying member should be part of and have a voice in. I do not wish to start a war. I do not wish to destroy the Union. What I do wish is that these issues that many of us have can be resolved now that there will be a new Business Manager on the E-Board. That's not to cut down the previous Business Manager - I am fully aware that she's been on the E-Board for many, many years and that throughout that time she's fought many, many battles on behalf of the classifieds. The problem is that during the more recent years, it seems that the circle of "beneficiaries" of union activities and negotiations has gotten smaller and smaller, and the black hole of communication has gotten larger.

A couple years ago, there was the "secret orange petition group" of around 40+ people who were tired enough and brave enough to go against the grain and try to create a new & improved Union that would benefit every member just as well, if not better, than the existing one. Obviously, that endeavor was unsuccessful, possibly due to a large misunderstanding of what the group was trying to accomplish. Unfortunately, people's frustrations did not go away as evidenced by the postings on this site, and have only gotten worse.

This blog site is NOT another attempt to start a new Union or get rid of the current Union. There have been NO secret meetings. The last thing I want to do is start another upheaval and division of the Classified body. We must stick together and act as one body, but to do so, each one of us needs to feel that we are all equally important to our Union representatives, and that we are all equally heard. Let's all try and work together to come up with a resolution. United we stand, divided we fall. That does not mean that those of us who disagree should just keep quiet and blindly follow the leaders - it means we as a group need to figure out a solution that we can all live with, since many of us will be working together for the next decade or two.

I very much agree with all that the creator of this site has stated. The facts are accurate and the intention is sincere.

I am glad this site was sent out to all classified staff. There are many new, young staff and those who have differing opinions with FUSE who haven't really been welcomed into our union. Indeed, there was a group a few years ago who made efforts to communicate our Union's weaknesses and the need for change. We didn't listen. Now is the time to pay attention, get involved and freshen up and revitalize our union.

I would like to suggest that we all create a new account so we can see how many people are here and we can address others accordingly. Start by creating an email account if you want to stay anonymous. Use your new email address to create your Blog account. I have created a hotmail account, fusemember1@hotmail.com. This might be a good format to use.

Since I'm sure the E-Board are now rounding up their inner-circle friends to start posting and the site will soon become just another place of "look at everything FUSE has done for you, how dare you question them". I would like to take a moment to thank the blogger for setting up a place where I can air my frustrations and know that I am not the only one that feels this way. Although I agree that all Classified need to see the site, this will be the last time I view it as I don't care to read the postings of the blind-sheep lead by Bernard and Shari being urged to post their defensive of the organization that will once again cover their wrong-doings and cause the majority of the Classified to put their heads back in the sand and thank FUSE for everything they have...

I am not a member of FUSE, but another competing bargaining unit. The unfortunate truth is how can you expect the FUSE business agent to represent your interests when they are actually a District employee? Truth is there is an obvious conflict of interest, whether it is by direct employment or through release time. Union dues would be better spent paying the salary of your representative rather than have them beholden to the District.

I agree. Additionally, for quite a few years, the business manager was good friends with the VP of HR. Another conflict of interest in my opinion. I don't think they need to be enemies, but that just meant that the district knew exactly what buttons to push and how to sweeten Shari's deal so she could have full release time, be accountable to no one, and retire with a high salary. How do I sign up for that job. I'll run for business manager if I don't have to do a sierra college job, get a fat salary, my car insurance paid, have a secretary and get to take trips to Hawaii and New York.

We know there are many issues that need to be addressed. Maybe now is a time to come up with possible solutions. We can all point out the flaws but how do we prevent them from happening again? I spoke to a FUSE member about this site who said, "if we (the Classified) were unhappy about Maggie being paid at a range 20, we shouldn't have voted on it." My first suggestion is to change the "package deal" voting system. Additionally, I think Sue needs to be given a chance. I think there is a LOT of room for change. Lets figure out specifically what changes to focus on!
