A safe place to speak our minds about FUSE operations, whether good or bad, and not risk being made a public target & outcast.

Word of the Day

There is a clear issue in most of the comments that’s coming across loud and clear, and can be summed up into one word: ACCOUNTABILITY. So, perhaps before we decide where we want the union to go, we need to decide how the union should go.
  • What would the best way for the E-Board to find out what the membership wants as far as negotiations, E-Board release time, temp positions, & other areas?
  • What are the processes currently in place as far as E-Board decision making, and what ways can they be modified so that the membership can take a more active role in those process?
  • In regards to our dues money, would we be ok with just a heads up before money is spent so we can submit any concerns, or should expenditure requests be approved by the membership? And would this process be for just the large expenses, like travel and temp salaries, or every minor expenditure? Or, should only certain categories be required to have membership approval, like travel, food, donations? Another possibility would be for the membership to approve a detailed budget at the beginning of the year.
  • What kind of timelines do we feel are appropriate for recollections, expenditures, and contract ratifications? And how easily accessible should they be? Public Folders? FUSE website? By request only?
  • Finally, what is an acceptable majority of the membership? Is 51% enough, or should decisions/approvals be based on a higher approval rate? (I would hope that the E-Board would have serious reservations with anything less than a 75-80% approval rate, and that it would go back before the membership to further discuss the issues & come to an agreement.)

Obviously, if we, the members, needed to approve every little detail, then our Union leaders would not be able to meet certain time lines in their negotiations and operations – however, the current state of operations is not the way many members feel it should be. The accountability factor needs to land somewhere in the middle, and we all should have a say as to where that point is.

I suggest that the Union survey the membership about all the issues mentioned in these posts and that all members have a way to respond anonymously. (Numbered paper copies or emailed voting buttons won’t work – we need the guarantee of fully anonymous responses so that everyone feels comfortable to say what they really think.) The results should be available to all members as well, and the E-Board should take into serious consideration what its members are telling them.

I have a question...how many people are reading this blog? I agree there needs to be some accountability and a change, but the majority of the classified staff are going to flip when someone proposes a change be made. Majority of the classified staff think the union is perfect and would die before asking an accountability type question. That's why I'm wondering how many people were sent the link to this site.

I think you are wrong. The majority of the classified staff wants change. Nice manipulation but the majority of the staff does not think the union is perfect. I would like to propose a change. Let’s eliminate Maggie's position.

To answer your question about how many people have read this site: At the time I sent out the link to this site, I didn't know the address for the distribution list to all classifieds when sending something from the outside world, so I sent it to a handful off the top of my head, along with the comment to pass it around to those interested. So again, anyone reading this site, feel free to pass it around.

I was just curious....not trying to manipulate. I think you misundertood. I am all for eliminating Maggie's position, having the business manager have to work a sierra college job part of the time (not have full release time) and think the Eboard should be accountable to the members for their expenditures, negotiations, etc. I was just remembering what happened about 1 year ago when a group of classified staff proposed some changes and the uproar that was heard around campus. That's when the Eboard decided that we all had to make appointments to view the balance sheets, etc. I don't even know if that is legal. Anyway...I hope I AM wrong and the majority of staff want change and don't continuing to let these actions continue to occur without any questions. Geez...just thinking about the way they dictate gets my blood boiling.

About the thing that happed a year ago as you called it, it was an attempt to eliminate the Union and in doing so we would of lost our current contract and we as a group or employees would have to form something and try to negotiate a contract or every person would be on there own to negotiate there own pay and benefits. For me I think this is what the big upset was all about. If one thinks the management of this college would not like to see the union gone, then you are greatly mistaken.

I would like to see the "Administrative Assistant" position eliminated as well. The "Business Manager" position has full release time. I would really like to have know exactly what the previous BM did 40 hours a week and these hours need to have been accounted for to the constiuents.
